About This Course

As the war on talent intensifies and the skilled talent pool shrinks, how do you ensure you are hiring right? In this highly interactive, application, and simulation-driven workshop, participants learn about cognitive biases, the 5Ws, and the BEI approaches to interviewing, and the ideal interview process from planning to calibration.

Note: This is a mastery-oriented workshop that involves assessment and certification. Participants must complete all program requirements and achieve a threshold score in the post evaluation to receive certification.

Participants also receive checklists and job-aids to assist them while interviewing. This workshop is driven through case studies, quizzes, and realistic role-play exercises. Participants work through the Master Interviewing Skills workbook during the workshop. All participants receive an interview best practices guidebook, checklists, and tip cards that help transfer the learning to the job.

Learning Journey (7-8 hours)

  1. Pre-workshop teaser email, self-paced learning on importance of good hiring practices, and a case study: 10 minutes
  2. Hiring Right workshop (ILT/VCT): 6-8 hours
  3. Spaced practise using short online and self-paced simulations: 30 minutes
  4. Mock interview with the assessor: 20 minutes
  5. Certification

Workshop Outline

Skill Drill 1: Cognitive Biases that Impact Interviews

In this skill drill, we will explore the impact of cognitive biases on the interview process and identify ways to minimise their impact. We will explore 5 biases:

  1. Confirmation Bias
  2. Affinity Bias
  3. Halo Effect
  4. Stereotypes
  5. Prejudice

Session Outcomes

  • Recognise the impact of cognitive biases on the interview process
  • Explore the five fundamental biases that impact interviews
  • Identify strategies to minimise the impact of the five biases

Skill Drill 2: Behavioural Event Interviewing

In this skill drill, we will do a deep dive into structured interviews and explore the Behavioural Event Interview (BEI) technique for uncovering behavioural and competency areas.

Session Outcomes

At the end of this skill drill, participants will be able to:

  • Develop an appreciation for structured interviewing and the Behavioural Event Interview (BEI) technique
  • Apply the BEI process using the STAR technique
  • Practice interviewing using the STAR technique
  • Appreciate the importance of taking notes and rating scientifically

Skill Drill 3: Technical and Functional Interviewing

In this skill drill, we will explore technical and functional interviewing using the 5Ws interview technique. The 5Ws technique is a structured interview technique that can be used assess technical competency areas.

Session Outcomes

At the end of this skill drill, participants will be able to:

  • Explore the 5Ws process for conducting technical interviews
  • Practice the 5Ws process to conduct technical interviews

Proficiency Assessment

This part of the program will require participants to take a series of online assessments and simulations that will test their understanding of Biases, and Structured Interviewing using BEI and 5Ws. Participants will also be required to conduct a mock interview with an assessor who will be evaluating the participant in their ability to conduct a BEI. Participants who receive a threshold score in the assessment, will be certified.

At the end of this skill drill, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate task competency to carry out a BEI using the STAR technique
  • Demonstrate task competency to carry out an interview to assess technical skills using the 5Ws technique
